Petrenko Leads Men

Later, across the Halifax harbor in the Halifax Metro Centre, Viktor Petrenko of the Soviet Union skated a near flawless original program to take the lead in the men's competition over Kurt Browning of Canada, the defending champion.

In a performance that included an unusual - and optional - combination of two triple jumps, Petrenko won the highest scores from eight of the nine judges. Two judges gave him perfect scores of 6.0 for his artistic merit, six others, 5.9.

Wylie, who has never seemed to step over the line separating good skaters from the great, was scored 14th on the round to rank 13th over all. He was unavailable to reporters after the round.

It was only a rousing performance by a Canadian tema, Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler, that prevented a sweep. They finished second, pushing the third Soviet team, Larisa Selezneva and Oleg Makarov, to fourth.
