And so the women's competition came to a surprising end tonight, with Witt, who won the gold medal in 1984, winning another gold to make her the first repeat women's single champion since Sonja Henie of Norway won her third consecutive Olympic title in 1936.

She was right, although her scores - a range of 5.6 to 5.8 for technical merit and one 5.7 to two 5.9's with the rest 5.8's for artistic impression - were not insurmountable.

She finished fourth in this phase of the competition, behind Manley, Witt and Midori Ito of Japan, who won the best technical marks of all 24 skaters by completing all seven of her triple jumps.

Unsure of Balance
''I didn't feel over my feet at all,'' Thomas said, referring to her sense of balance.

Manley, who skated to ''Irma La Douce'' and ''Canadian Concerto,'' was everything Thomas was not. When she finished her program, she was wildly happy, overwhelmed with joy, and eventually tears streamed down her face.

''I haven't felt lot of pressure,,'' Manley said of her week. ''It's been the Debi and Katarina story here. I've just been off on my own. After a day of rest, she tried to practice this afternoon, but couldn't.

But then came the next surprise.
