先駆けはtrailblazer

trailは小道、blazeは目印をつけるという意味の動詞から。pathfinderも文字通り「草分け」という意味で面白い。

TRAILBLAZER

Takahashi was the first Japanese man to win the World Junior, World and Grand Prix Final titles. However, the one regret of his skating career was not winning an Olympic crown.

先駆け

高橋は世界ジュニア、世界選手権、グランプリファイナルのタイトルを取った最初の日本人男子だ。しかし、彼のスケートキャリアで一つ後悔しているのは、オリンピックの王冠を手にしていないことだった。

“I have had so many wonderful results and experiences — more than I ever dreamed of when I first started skating,” he said.

「私はたくさんの素敵な結果も経験もできてきた。はじめてスケートをしたときに夢見てた以上に。」

“However, once I started being successful, my dream became winning an Olympic gold medal, and I was not able to achieve that. Everything else I was the first Japanese man to do. Initially, I did not realize I was the first to achieve many things, but when you keep hearing that you really become conscious of it.”

「だけど、成功し始めてからすぐに私の夢はオリンピックの金メダルを取ることとなりました。それを達成できなかった。私がはじめての日本男子としてしたこと以外すべて。最初に、私がたくさんのことを達成したはじめての人だと気づかなかった。だけどそれを本当に意識しはじめてずっと聞いてきた」

Figure Skating was one of the first sports that was practiced by women and men. However, originally only men competed in Figure Skating, starting in the 19th century. The first Championships of America was held in Troy (New York) in 1864. Jackson Haines won this event. He was a pioneer of Figure Skating and the first to include ballet and dance moves into skating. The traditional ice skating focused on tracing patterns on the ice.

フィギュアスケートは女性、男性に実施された初めてのスポーツの一つである。しかし、19世紀始まり頃、元々は男性しかフィギュアスケートの競技はしてなかった。初めてのアメリカ選手権は1864年のニューヨーク州トロイで行われた。ジャクソン・ヘインズはこの試合で勝った。彼はフィギュアスケートのパイオニアであり、初めてバレエやダンスをスケートの動きに取り入れた。伝統的なアイススケートは氷上でこのパターンをなぞるようになった。

Fernández acknowledged that being a pioneer in Spanish skating has been both a burden and a blessing, but one he has willingly taken on because it is so important to him.

フェルナンデスはスペインのスケートでパイオニアになることは負担でもあるしありがたいことでもあると分かっている。だけど彼が喜んで受け入れているのは、それが彼にとって大切なことだからだ。

“It’s not an easy job. You need to develop a name in figure skating, so that everyone will recognize you and know that you’re going to compete in a particular competition,” he said.

彼は言う。「簡単な仕事じゃない。フィギュアスケートの知名度を上げる必要がある。みんなが選手を知るようになって選手が試合に出るんだってことも知るために。」

“There is also the aspect of trying to develop your country’s reputation and then introduce it to the skating world. It is a good thing that Spanish people now recognize that we are competing at Europeans, Worlds and Olympics.（IFS）
